Tree leaf identification is very useful if you're interested in learning the different characteristics of each tree. Indeed, trees are necessary for our survival. They provide oxygen by removing carbon dioxide in the air and they help us stabilize the soil so that the surrounding area won't get flooded in case of a heavy rain.
Tree leaf identification is actually very simple. The first step in identifying a tree's name is to first determine the type of leaves you have. There are basically a few types of leaves:
- Needle-like
- Scale-like
- Broadleaf
In tree leaf identification, a tree that has needle-like leaves usually belongs to the cypress, fir, larch, pine or spruce family. Scale-like leaves usually belongs to the cedar or juniper family which are both conifer or evergreen. If you have broadleaf type leaves, you can be rest assured that it belongs to the hardwoods group. If you find that the leaves are unevenly balanced but lobed, you can almost be certain that you have either a mulberry or a sassafras.

As you can see, with some basic tree leaf identification, you can easily tell a tree's name. There are however so leaves that are more complex and confusing but with practise, you should be able to identify them easily.
With such leaves, you need to examine how the leaves are grouped on the stem once you determine the leaf shape.
You need to go beyond basic tree leaf identification and take a closer look. Notice that some leaves appear alone. Those leaves are grouped as simple type. There are some leaves that appear in groups and they are usually made up of leaftles. Those type of leaves are grouped as compound type.
Since each of type of leaves is very different from each other, there are many things you can learn just my examining them. For example, some leaves have a base, apex and margin while others only have a petolule, rachis and terminal leaflet. In short, tree leaf identification is very easy to learn and once you have mastered the trick, you can easily identify any tree with ease and impress your family and friends.
